As a first year PhD student at the University of Oxford, I am interested in how people understand, use and protect the marine environment. Through my work on organisms ranging from sea stars to eels, and on enforcement in Marine Protected Areas, I have been amazed by the ocean’s diversity, complexity and resilience. However, the topic of marine conservation tends to bring out sighs at dinner parties, as people commiserate over the deplorable state of the ocean. I’m looking forward to adding some new success stories and suggestions for positive action to my arsenal!

I see the Conservation Optimism Summit as an opportunity to reframe our views on conservation, gain exposure to new ways of thinking, and celebrate our successes thus far. I am excited to work on the committee and bring together various examples of the progress made by scientists, NGOs and community organisers in different ecosystems.
